Charles Spurgeon found no cure for his depression...

I don’t know why I write these things. I really doubt if anyone can relate or if any one reads, but the one thing I recall is that the way I got through hard times were through these things I wrote. No, I did not write them, but someone that had gone through similar things had written them. That was how I got through my darkest days, reading experiences and learning from those who had traversed that howling desert and now I’m doing the same for you. Perhaps you’re going through the same season.

Here’s another journal entry from 2022, I also did not write the date [ I need to fix this date writing issue ]. This journal entry was titled “How can I serve God while Battling with Depression”.

Charles Spurgeon struggled with depression like you are now, like I did and like I sometimes do… While Spurgeon found no cure for his depression, he still committed a good portion of his life (more than 38years) to serving God by preaching throughout Great Britain.

Spurgeons life shows that perhaps there is another way to view depression. Not as something that’s crippling but a way for me to experience God’s love and faithfulness in greater depths.

Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. - Hebrews 2:18

For Spurgeon the garden of sorrows where Jesus said to his disciples, “My soul is overwhelmed with deep anguish and sorrow to the point of death” (Matt 26:38) gives me a picture of “mental depression”. Because of that, sufferers of depression can find a place to rest within the storyline of Jesus, to know that He once suffered deep anguish and sorrow to the point of death.

Jesus understands my pains and struggles because He Himself had faced it all in it’s different facets. I can surrender my feelings to Him. Spurgeon encourages that I should actively participate in different ways that could naturally help lift my mood.

If you’re going through depression and you’d like to talk, mail me @emmanuellaubokabasi@gmail.com

Till then, take care and see you in my next entry…
